Palm Trees Do Grow In Southern Utah

By Brian

The Washington, Utah, In-N-Out

Last month, in discussing In-N-Out’s plans for a restaurant in northern Utah, we mentioned the company’s concerns that palm trees wouldn’t grow in ski country. We also speculated — based on flickr photos like the one above — that In-N-Out’s sole existing Utah location also lacked palm trees.

Well, we all know what happens when you assume things (even based on photographic evidence), and it’s been nagging at us ever since. So today we called up In-N-Out and asked! The friendly INO operator informed us that there are indeed a handful of restaurants without the iconic crossed palm trees, either due to climate or local zoning laws. She then offered to contact the manager of the Washington, Utah, location to get a definitive answer, which we had within minutes: Yes, there are crossed palm trees.

Now who wants to send us a photo of them? :)

  1. Memo Says:

Southern Utah…(Washington, St. George, Bloomington, Santa Clara) is about 113 miles from Vegas and 3-5 miles from the Arizona border. Palm trees grow very well in St. George and some like California and Mexican fan palms can be seen growing wild near ditches and streams. If you visit St. George or Washington you would never think you were in Utah. The mountains around St. George get snow in the winter, but valley snow is rare and melts fast.

Boy, I’m behind on this one. Just barely getting to some of my Flickr comments.

I don’t think we’ll get palm trees here in the Salt Lake area. They may not survive the harsh winters we get.
